What is Director Identification Number?

All you need to know about Director Identification Number?

What is a DIN?

A Director Identification Number (DIN) is a unique 8-digit number issued by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs to individuals intending to become directors of a company in India. This number is necessary for legally acting as a director in a company. The DIN is granted only once and allows individuals to serve as directors in multiple companies without the need to apply for separate DINs for each company.

Rules for Obtaining DIN:

  • For New Companies: The first three directors can apply for a DIN through the SPICe Plus form.
  • For Existing Companies: Directors need to apply for DIN through the DIR-3 form. They must also attach a board resolution along with the digital signature of an existing company director.

For example, if Mr. Manoj wishes to apply for a DIN to be a director in ABC Company, he will need the board resolution of ABC Company along with the digital signature of any current director of the company.

Validity of DIN: Once issued, a DIN has lifetime validity and does not require reactivation or renewal. However, the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) can deactivate or disqualify the DIN if the director or company is found in violation of relevant laws or guidelines.

FAQs On DIN Application

A Director Identification Number (DIN) is a unique 8-digit number assigned by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) to individuals who wish to become a director of a company in India. It serves as a legal identification for directors across companies.

If your DIN application has been rejected, it does not necessarily mean you need to apply for a fresh DIN. You can review the reason for rejection, correct any errors, and resubmit the application. However, in case of repeated rejections, a fresh application may be needed.

No, a provisional DIN cannot be used for e-filing. Only an approved, valid DIN can be used for e-filing and for official purposes like ROC filings, signing documents, etc.

Yes, having a valid Income Tax PAN is mandatory while applying for a DIN. The PAN is used to verify the individual's identity with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA).

If the details entered in the DIN application do not match those in the Income Tax PAN database, the application may be rejected. It is essential that the information provided is accurate and consistent with your PAN records to avoid discrepancies.

For foreign nationals, additional documents are required, including a passport copy, proof of address (from the country of residence), and in some cases, a visa copy. They may also need to provide a residential address proof and a valid immigration status as per Indian law.
