Import Export Code Registration

All you need to know

All businesses involved in the import and export of goods are required to obtain an Import Export Code (IEC) Registration.
What is an Import Export Code?

The Import Export Code (IEC) is a ten-digit number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. This code, which has permanent validity, is granted to businesses or individuals engaging in import/export activities. Without this code, importers are unable to clear shipments, and exporters are unable to access benefits from the DGFT, customs, or the Export Promotion Council.

When is an IEC Required?
IEC is mandatory in the following situations:

  • When an importer needs to clear shipments from customs, it is required by the customs authorities.
  • When an importer transfers money abroad through a bank, it is required by the bank.
  • When an exporter sends shipments through customs, the code is required at the customs port.
  • When an exporter receives payment in foreign currency directly into their bank account, submission of the IEC is required by the bank.

Benefits of IEC Registration in India

Here’s why you should consider applying for an Import Export Code (IEC):

Once issued, your IEC Certificate is valid for a lifetime with no expiry date. However, it needs to be updated annually. The IEC is valid nationwide, covering all your factories or business branches, making it a hassle-free solution for businesses across India.

To import goods into India, a valid IEC is mandatory. It must be quoted in all relevant customs documents. Additionally, banks require a valid IEC registration to process international payments for imports.

Exporters need an IEC to send goods overseas. Just like with imports, it must be mentioned in customs documents, and banks will ask for your IEC registration when receiving payments from abroad.

Having an IEC unlocks endless possibilities, giving you the access needed to explore and grow in the international business market. Expand your reach and discover global trade opportunities.

You don’t need a registered business to apply for an IEC—individuals can also register for it. No requirement to have a formal company set up to take part in international trade.

The IEC application process is simple and online—no need to submit any proofs of import or export. Get your IEC quickly and start engaging in international trade with ease!
